Former students compete in memory of Natalie
On 28th December, Rydal Penrhos saw some familiar faces return to its grounds. A few years wiser and perhaps a few pounds heavier (due to the Christmas dinner of course), the Old Girls and Boys met for a friendly kick, knock and throw around. Due to the tragic loss of an old Rydal Penrhos pupil Natalie Moss a few weeks earlier it was unknown if the event was to take place but with the blessing of the Moss family we decided to dedicate the day in memory of Natalie. A keen sportswomen and friend to many, there was a huge turnout to remember the good old days and celebrate the life of a beautiful girl. Generous match fees and cake stand run by Aisha Regan resulted in £300 being raised for the Natalie Moss Trust.
The boys kicked off the day’s proceedings with a nice early game of football to clear away any lingering Christmas hangovers. It was an impressive turnout for the match, with various different age groups making an appearance, and even one spectator – who left after a few minutes! The game was closely fought, with end to end action and some notable performances from Patrick Leach and Will Abakhan – who showed considerable technical ability throughout, and Will awarding himself ‘Man of the Match’! Once the cold set in, and the crowds turned up (obviously to watch the Hockey) – it was time for the final whistle and to watch the remainder of the day’s events.
Following the football the girls decided to show off their skills, and those boys who fancied themselves as elite athletes decided to grab a stick have a go too. A number of goals later the Papadapolou sisters reminded us they hadn’t lost their talents whilst the Wilson twins having not played since school demonstrated that they are not just pretty faces and played a mean game in midfield. With no shin pads or gum shield Iona Mumby never was too keen on hockey but managed to score a great goal in the 2nd half. Lots of laughs were had by all and particular mention should go to Ben Widdowson and Luke Jones who shocked the girls with their exceptional Hockey skills. Showing that the Rydalian competitive spirit stays with us the match was equally fought resulting in a final score of 3-2.
A cold wintry day we still managed to gain a large spectator turnout, unsurprisingly they weren’t complaining when the girls took to the sports hall in the afternoon for a game of netball. Double trouble, Craig Stock and Patch Leach stirred up some humour as they decided to give the girls a run for their money on the Netball Court. Quickly realising netball wasn’t just about girls in skirts the boys were put to their paces by the Jones sisters in defence. Vicky Patel and Catherine Evans were a strong combination in the circle whilst Keri Ringstead and Claire Jamison supported in centre court. An equally matched game a lot of fun was had by all. Particular thanks should go to Judith Wynne for umpiring the match for the girls.
Unsurprisingly the day ended with a meal in the famous Pen Y Bryn and a night out in Llandudno’s finest Broadway! A lovely day in memory of a beautiful young lady who has left her mark on all who knew her at Rydal Penrhos. Many thanks to Keri Ringstead and Claire Jamison and Will Abakhan for organising the day.
