Local runners raise money for charity at Fox Trot fell race
By Richard Watson
On Saturday 7th August, 45 runners took part in a 7 mile fell race from Newfield with just over 1000ft of ascent. The race was run through the Welsh Fell Running Association and the route took in parts of the old school cross country course heading out through Pwllycrochan Woods, with a steady climb up the Nant-y-Glyn valley towards Llysfaen before turning round and heading back down over open farmland with views of Colwyn Bay.The winning time was a very impressive 49:31 (Neil Parry from Clwydian Range Runners) and the first lady home was Andrea Rowlands (Eryri) in a time of 57:02. There was only 1 former pupil running in the end, Yvie Johnson, who completed the course in 1 hour and 8 minutes, with Nicola Lee-Browne (the Headmaster’s wife) coming in a few places before. A few others (Rory Grout, Ian Jones, Gareth Matthews and Chris Reece) had shown interest, but were unfortunately unable to make it in the end.
Russell Godwin (RS) returning from injury kindly acted as a sweeper runner at the rear of the field but is looking forward to entering next year.
Afterwards, all the runners, helpers and spectators enjoyed tea and cakes. Thanks must go to the landowners and all the marshals and helpers who did a fantastic job and to all those that made and donated cakes. Just over £175 was raised for the cancer unit at Glan Clwyd hospital in the end. For the full results and more photos from the day please visit the Welsh Fell Running website www.wfra.org.uk
The race will be run again next year (date TBC) but details will be posted on the Rydal Penrhos alumni website and in the Fell Running fixtures calendar. Next year I hope to attract a few more alumni members, so, if you fancy a run from school, please get in touch. This year’s event seemed to be a real success so hopefully next year’s will be even better.
